Winds Composition Contest Saxony

The Winds Composition Contest Saxony (WCCS) is an international composition competition for wind music organised by the Dresdner Bläserphilharmonie e.V. in cooperation with the association SHE LIVES. Composers can submit their works, which represent at least a wind trio up to a maximum of a large symphonic wind orchestra, until 15th September 2024. A prestigious jury will decide on the winners, who will be announced in an online ceremony in November. In addition, works will be selected from all the diverse compositions handed in, which the Dresdner Bläserphilharmonie will perform in both large and smaller ensembles throughout the 2025 concerts. The composition competition and the performances of the works will focus on the rich variety of wind music. The third edition of the contest takes place in 2024.

Why the Contest

The association of the Dresdner Bläserphilharmonie has the vision to build up a centre of wind music in Saxony. This is meant to show people how diverse wind music is and that it welcomes everyone from everywhere. The contest is held for the sake of a growing interest in wind music as well as it is a tool to connect people all around the world. Another reason why we do the contest is because it helps increasing number of pieces which are written originally for wind ensembles and wind orchestras. That is why every piece has the chance to be performed even if it does not win the contest.

About the Organisations

  • Dresdner Bläserphilharmonie e.V.

Since its foundation in 2008, the Dresdner Bläserphilharmonie e.V. and its orchestra have been part of the diverse cultural life of the city of Dresden and the state of Saxony. Professional and semi-professional musicians of all ages have dedicated themselves to the performance of symphonic wind music and the association can look back on a successful history in which the orchestra found a permanent concert venue in the Kulturpalast under the artistic direction of Stefan Fritzen (former solo trombonist of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden).

Since 2019, conductor Andrea Barizza has been the orchestra’s artistic director. With his new artistic concept and vision for the association, the activities of the orchestra have been further developed and the offer to spread the winds culture has been enriched. In addition to the concerts in Dresden, the orchestra now travels through Saxony and Brandenburg, bringing wind music to smaller towns. It also offers musical and educational workshops as well as presentations and is dedicated to the support of young musicians.

A future cooperation between the Dresdner Bläserphilharmonie e.V. and the Hochschule für Musik Dresden is currently being worked out. In addition, a mentoring programme has been founded, which includes musicians from the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and the Dresdner Philharmonie, who support and mentor the Bläserphilharmonie in its further artistic development.

  • Associazione SHE LIVES

SHE LIVES, the leading European musical association for promoting the dissemination of contemporary music, was created to promote the music of our time and free it from the tired and mechanical habit of defining it by approaching the noun “music” with the adjective “contemporary”: contemporaneity is not and cannot be a declination of musical language, but the condition in which we live in the present time.

Conceived by Fabiana Piersanti and founded together with Guido Barbieri and composer Alessio Elia, since 2012 the association has organized events and collaborated in partnership with some of the most prestigious institutions in Europe: I Solisti del Teatro alla Scala di Milano, RAI Radio 3, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, University of Performing Arts Mannheim, Istituto Svizzero di Roma, Hungarian Academy in Rome, Filarmonica Romana, Isabella Scelsi Foundation, Reale Ambasciata di Norvegia, LAC – Lugano Arte e Cultura, Festival oggimusica, Yamaha Concert Hall Wien, Pro Helvetia, Contemporary Art Festival Budapest, UMZE – the historic ensemble founded by Béla Bartók, Chigiana Music Academy, BMC – Budapest Music Center, the recording labels Warner Classics and Naxos.

SHE LIVES wants to go beyond the academic perimeter of so-called contemporary classical music, tenaciously cultivating all possible resonances between the sound of our time and the sound objects produced by history. SHE LIVES therefore naturally opens its eyes to the authors and works that escape the conventional canons of contemporary language and welcomes in its territory all the music and all the musicians who conquer the right to belong to the universe of contemporaneity.
